We are excited to announce that the next MADD Walk event (now called “Move with MADD”) is Saturday, September 13, 2025! It’s especially exciting this year as the event will be on the UW main campus! It starts and ends at Red Square.
Not only is this a personal cause for Adler Giersch families, but also for our clients whose lives and health have been impacted by a drunk or impaired driver. Our advocacy continues through attorney, Arthur Leritz, who is a current board member for the DUI/Target Zero task force in Snohomish County, and past advisory board member for MADD-Washington.
Did you know that over half the traffic fatalities in Washington State were linked to impaired driving? Drunk driving kills more than 12,000 people a year in the United States. What about all of the new, teen drivers on the road (207,618 Washington teens in 2024?) A young driver has finally gained a sense of freedom, yet their brains are not fully developed to grasp the long term consequences of impulsive decisions. In addition, teens have a strong need to feel accepted and to feel like they are a part of a group. According to 3rd Millennium Classrooms, “Teens who have a friend who drinks alcohol are 1.89 times more likely to drink alcohol themselves.” An article in Vanderbilt Health said, “Almost 17% of teens said they’d ridden with a driver who had been drinking at least once in recent weeks.”
How can we prevent drunk/impaired driving from affecting our community? We can financially support MADD so that their programs continue to flourish. MADD programs include being a champion for anti-drunk driving technology, leading prevention efforts across all communities in the U.S., supporting victims and survivors, and advocating for stricter laws.
We can also call attention to the reality of drunk/impaired driving within our own sphere of influence. Register for your local MADD Walk where you will hear inspiring stories, connect with like-minded community and business members, and do your part to raise awareness and honor the ones we have lost.
